Wish For A Lover

May he be gentle, yet may he be strong
To bear all wind and rain against his cheek,
Eager to battle what he knows is wrong,
Yet slow to anger, and, in self-praise, meek.
May he be beauty-loving, turning back
To hear one bird again, or find one flower,
And may he be a dreamer, yet not lack
Stamina for an unforeseen dark hour.
May he know intimately deep, kind laughter,
May he have working hands, and eyes that say
All he cannot. . . May he be tolerant after
He learns how much I love him, some far day.
