Ancestors

If resourcefulness is needed, think of Michael Rudolf
Who, accompanied by two henchmen and a coop of pullets,
Took a British craft in the War of Eighteen-Twelve
With gusto and it minimum exchange of bullets.

And if coolness is desired, consider Sarah Cope
Who, opening a clothes press where a thief was hid,
Said in her Quaker fashion: Friend, all honest folk
Should be in bed, alight thee out! And did.

ELEANOR GLENN WALLIS.
