Design for a last letter

Dearest:
If I'm not home in time for tea,
Put on the silver pot and light the fire,
Use the new Wedgwood cups you brought to me,
The slender spoons that once were heart's desire,
Turn on the radio and shed no tear,
Nor mourn the hours that passed when I was there,
Let the first inch of twilight banish fear
And keep this interlude serene and fair.
Still if your thoughts turn to me and to things
We did together, let them still be glad,
Consider my delight in choosing wings,
A golden harp and jewels I never had,
Or better still, if you are feeling blue,
Think of me planning where we next shall meet,
Deciding on a certain star, or hue
To grace a cottage on a golden street.

GLADYS McKEE.
